Contra Costa County

Contra Costa County covers an area of 716 square miles and includes 19 cities and several unincorporated communities. It is home to approximately 400,000 residents and has a population exceeding 1.16 million, making it the ninth-most populous county in California. The region enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate and features over 1,200 hiking trails and numerous reservoirs that are excellent for fishing and boating.

The eastern part of the county includes the California Delta, known for outdoor activities such as fishing, water skiing, and boating. Luxury waterfront homes can be found in Discovery Bay and Bethel Island, which offer water access. In Central Contra Costa, several cities, including Blackhawk, Danville, Alamo, San Ramon, Orinda, Lafayette, and Walnut Creek, are recognized for their ultra-luxury properties.

To manage urban sprawl and protect agricultural land, voters approved the Urban Limit Line in 1990, restricting urban development to 35% of the county’s land until 2026. Four cities have also enacted ordinances to limit urban sprawl further. The county government is committed to studying and implementing policies that enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors while aligning with the community’s long-term development vision.
